Homesickness Remedies
What helps you when you miss home?
For most people who have moved away from home, there will be times when we miss home. It might be a time of the year you enjoy, a holiday which you have always celebrated with your family, or simply wanting to be part of life back home for a while. It can be difficult to sit with these feelings at times.
If you recently moved to a different country or geographic region, you might still be going through the acute phase of ‘culture shock’ and it might be particularly relevant to have some go-to remedies for homesickness that address the longing for home as well as the desire to connect more with your host culture.
So how can we respond to feeling homesick? Here are a few considerations. First, we likely already have effective ways of dealing with feelings of homesickness. You could take a moment to reflect on when you have experienced homesickness in the past, and what was helpful.
Second, it’s worth considering that everyone will experience and deal with homesickness differently at different times. You can take the pressure off by simply adding “for me” and “right now” to your reflections. “What am I missing right now?” or “What seems to be helping me right now?”.
